VVC Faculty Leader Honored

Longtime faculty leader Debra Blanchard received the prestigious WHO Award (We Honor Ours) in Newport Beach, CA April 16, 2005. This award is presented for outstanding faculty leadership and commitment to teaching. Ms. Blanchard was recognized for her over 25 years of dedicated service as a faculty member and advocate. Among her achievements, Ms. Blanchard coached VVC women's basketball to nine successful seasons, and has served the longest term as a faculty executive officer in the history of Victor Valley College. She has served as chair of the Physical Education department, and is known as a tireless worker on behalf of teachers.

When asked what she felt her greatest contribution to the college was, she replied, "Defending faculty rights and striving to support student success and access has always been my top priority. Faculty working conditions are student learning conditions. So, my greatest challenge has been to work with the current administration, who have repeatedly eliminated faculty, staff and classes at a time when the college's enrollment continues to expand". While Blanchard stresses the importance of educational quality, "the administration seems to be focused on cutting jobs and cutting classes."
